Natalie: We're going to Lola's room next Friday.
Zac: Cool. But before that we should design a bike.
Natalie: I really have no idea how bikes work
Zac: me either!

I had a thought regarding the subversion of the consumer powers that be while seeing M83 with Dave at the Doug Fir on Thanksgiving. I remember standing at the show thinking about all the technology crammed onto that stage. Guitars, pedals, keyboards, reverb soaked vocals, a laptop or two, and a sound wall behind which the drums played — all combined seamlessly. That great, truly affecting...

perceptions matter
Sometimes the whole “people before profits” thing at work feels more like the first half of a declaration that would conclude “.. and shiny toys above all.” I wouldn’t mind seeing fewer whizbang clip on gadgets or gratuitously large flat screen monitors.
I know they do good things there and I know I’m a small part of that story, but these perceptions matter...

There is one constant I’ll always have no matter the advances made in technology, no matter the evolutions in thinking, be them cultural or personal, and no matter the shape of my experience with what it is to be alive, and that constant is my faith in the human face to contain it all.

a record
In the past three days I have heard more people say more brilliant things than seems possible. In the moment I’ll mentally commit to quoting their brilliance, but I lose track of it all and what deserves a record for safe keeping slips through me and sinks to someplace I can’t verbalize. I havn’t been sleeping much lately, but I’m not distressed. I feel just the...

A nifty little way to save a tree or two. Who needs a phone book these days? There are plenty of perfectly decent people to talk to these days. Just take a walk.

in the bread aisle
At the grocery store today I saw a woman facing the wall of bread in aisle one. I couldn’t yet see it, but she had an earbud plugged into one ear and streaming from it was, apparently, some sound that compelled her to move. As I take in this simple, not altogether unusual sight, I see a man come around the corner, take in the same sight from the opposing side and then to himself, laugh at...

good nights start spicy and end in huddle...
The title pretty much sums it up. I’ve been meaning to write this down for a couple days. No matter. Sunday evening started out slow and spicy at Por Que No’s new, second location, on Hawthorne. Dave left us to make his way home, it being Sunday evening and all. Myself, Natalie, Christy and Caitlin headed to Space Room…er, no… BOG. No wait, no… Sapphire Hotel. ...

Try to be
Try to be reasonable with me and ill go metaphysical on your ass.
Try to be deep with me and ill tell you what the science says.
Where am I immoveable?

Truth is a coffee table.
magnoliasurgeon:
Like a violent affection Burning up from the depths of nostalgia Reaching a fiery hand into my chest Blackening my blood Turning all my ambitions on end I know very little of what I see And everything that came before has been distorted Corners have been sharpened or rounded as I please All is masked or intensified Until nothing of truth remains.

Prop 8
There’s been some discussion about the effect that Obama’s recent victory had on Proposition 8 in California. Prop 8, for those unsure, bans gay marriage in California, the United States most populated state. The thinking is that Obama turned out a disproportionate number of African American voters and that those voters supported Prop 8 by a large margin, tipping the balance and...

Man: Who comes to Berbati's to smoke cigars?
Me: Yeah man
Man: You smell that? What you thinking, Berbati's? Cigars?
Me: I know it. [slurring] Don't I know it!
Man: Now, you wanna come to Berbati's to stand next to a large black man at the urinals, talking 'bout cigars, thats whatchya do.

Heather and I arranged a trade: I would take care of her cats for two days and she would be in one of these videos. Done and done. This is Laurelhurst Park, well into the season of changing colors and just before the leaves started falling.

Alex and Christy have a dance off. We all win.
This is the 9th track on the Walkmen’s You & Me album and its actually quite danceable.

Dave lets it all go. This is perhaps my favorite of the series, but I say that about them all.

The Walkmen’s most recent album “You & Me” blows my mind. Still. After weeks of listening to it. This is a video to part of the first song. It features Caitlin, on a lovely Fall afternoon, strolling Portland’s fine, fine streets. The 20 second mark features my favorite moment in all seven videos (so far — I’m talking to those of you Ive not a had a...
