totally cheating.
November is National Novel Writing month. I’m gonna give it a shot. I’m totally cheating by forming my opening few sentences ahead of time (below).  But I’m forgoing any pre-november outline or character development.  It’s just gonna have to pour out, if I’m lucky. Big thanks to Ramon for giving a shot last year and reminding me of it this year.  I’ll probably...

late french fees
I toss my books into the my bike basket, turn on my lights, for the sun had just set, and hussle down the block to the corner of Belmont and 39th.  My neighbor, leaving her apartment with a slamming of the door, startles me. The light is long.  I wait. My neighbor catches up to me on foot and remarks, “Your butt is blinking.”  We chat for a moment.  The light turns in our favor.  I...

I lost my voice. Not my actual, speaking voice.  Thats perfectly functional.  I mean my voice voice.  Know what I mean?  My larger theme went quiet, my inner-net fell of the grid, my story arc went poof! And then it all came back. When and how is it that you catch yourself? It’s the dishes for me.  I do those dishes and even as I move my hands, I watch them.  And there, buffing to a...

Are you paid?
Only with a concept of free will in mind do employers consider ones wage.  Yet the evidence for free will is slim. Interesting. I guess that means the concept of free will is pro-business but the absense of free will would make our universe… a communist? blah, blah, blah… slow day at work.

Its hard to believe how far away, how long ago, how impossible to have imagined, and how… unreachable some times in my life occassionally feel. I wonder, how did it happen that Natalie is here dancing with my mother on a hard wood dance floor in the middle of Ybor City? I know how it happened technically, as with time and how one moment-thing leads to the next, each of us steering wobbly...

Turnout.
In 2004 voter turnout in Multnomah County (that’s Portland) was just shy of 85%. 85%. Sometimes living in Portland really is like living in another world.

I went to Trader Joe’s yesterday and picked up some much needed essentials, most importantly among these:  apple cider. DELICIOUS. Before apple cider I was missing two things absolutely critical to a perfect Autumn. Apple cider: check. And now, about these magical disappearing French girls.  You know the kind I mean.  Vintage bicycle, with a basket and some flowers (wilted now for the...

2 or 3 Things I Know About Her
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDP74DxCYB0 Ten minutes of Godard’s “2 or 3 Things I Know About Her.”   It’s on of my favorite movies.  I saw it for the first time in the biggest auditorium at the Hollywood Theatre in Portland, Ore. This movie is roughly about a middle class woman that becomes a prostitute so that she can buy more things.  It about much more than that...

Where I Come From
I was out delivering coffee beans, coming back from Vancouver, WA.  I’d put on Radiohead’s most recent, In Rainbows. It was getting towards the end of the album.  I was way up high at Rocky Butte making my second to last drop.  I finish there and descend back down into the city.  The last track, Videotape comes on.  I’m hypnotized.  Its like sound is the only sensation thats...

4:14am
At 4:14am, on some morning (let’s just call it this one), I woke feeling better.  No accelerated heart rate, no pounding headache, no twitches of fever.  I was, however so thoroughly covered in sweat as to be near drowning.  My hair was soaked.  My face was slick and dripping.  I could barely peal my sweatshirt off. I took a shower and slept for four more hours. Disease, I’ve only...
